Identifying key regions

Introduction: In recent years, HSG, a prominent jewellery manufacturer, embarked on a journey to not only enhance the sustainability of its operations but also make a meaningful impact on the lives of artisanal and small-scale miners (ASMs). Recognising the ethical and environmental concerns surrounding traditional mining practices, the company committed to sourcing a significant portion of its gemstones and precious metals from these underrepresented and often marginalised mining communities.

Challenge: HSG faced the challenge of maintaining consistent product quality while sourcing ethically and sustainably from ASMs. Traditional mining methods often resulted in environmental damage, unsafe working conditions, and exploitation. The company needed to develop a sourcing strategy that would not only support these miners but also ensure responsible practices throughout the supply chain.

Strategy: HSG began by identifying key regions with a history of artisanal and small-scale mining. They initiated partnerships with local mining cooperatives, offering technical training, equipment, and safety measures to improve mining practices. The company also implemented a traceability system, allowing them to track the origin of each gemstone and metal used in their products.
