Knowledge Center
Welcome to HSG’s Knowledge Centre Here you will find information about the work we do on the ground, in-depth insights into the industry, and the challenges and opportunities. All whilst sharing our ethnographic research around communities we work with and achievements around what they do.
Through HSG’s research, most of the gold in the world is produced through hard rock mining, which is an extraction of gold from rocks. This could be done through open-pit or underground mining, where the ore is extracted from tunnels or shafts. ‘Africa has up to 3,900 meters (12,800 ft) underground deepest hard rock gold mine in the world. Undoubtedly mineral extraction has a significant impact on the environment. The big established mining companies and the Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) have been blamed for the volumes, speed and manner of extracting these natural resources (HSG,2021). Nevertheless, ASGM mining is rising, with operations in about eighty countries in the Global South. Although with limited literature on this, it is believed that 20% of world gold production and about 90% of “all employment in gold mining” is from small-scale gold extraction or mining (HSG, 2021).
HSG will be using the Knowledge Centre as a hub to share published work from our expert team and share strategies and research around the societal, environmental and industrial impact of mining and economic benefits.

We aim to foster fair stakeholder engagement, creating a more equitable and inclusive future for all.
